How to Convert Images to WebP (and When You Shouldn't)

WebP can shave a third off your image sizes with no visible quality loss, which is why it's everywhere. But converting isn't always the right move. Here's how to do it well and when to skip it.

Why convert to WebP at all

WebP compresses more efficiently than both JPG and PNG while supporting transparency and both lossy and lossless modes. For anything living on the web — a personal site, a portfolio, a store — smaller images mean faster pages, better search rankings, and less bandwidth. Converting a folder of JPGs and PNGs to WebP is one of the easiest performance wins available.

How to convert

You have three broad options:

Whichever you use, the setting that matters is quality for lossy WebP. Around 80–90% is the sweet spot — visually indistinguishable from the original for most images, with a big size saving. Lossless WebP is available too, and is the better pick for graphics with sharp edges.

Batch converting

If you're converting many images — say, everything you just downloaded from a page — do it in one pass. A batch tool applies the same format and quality to every file at once, which is far faster than exporting them individually. When you download images with an extension, choosing WebP as the output format converts everything on the way down, so there's no separate conversion step at all.

Keep an original

WebP conversion of a lossy source is still lossy. If you might edit later, keep the untouched original and convert only a copy.

When not to convert to WebP

WebP isn't always the answer:

Does converting change resolution?

No. Converting between formats changes how the image is encoded and how big the file is — not how many pixels it contains. A blurry image converted to WebP is still blurry, just smaller on disk. WebP is the right default for images headed to the web: convert at 80–90% quality, batch it when you can, keep an original, and fall back to JPG or PNG only when compatibility demands it.
